Alexander String Quartet

  • Zakarias Grafilo — violin
  • Frederick Lifsitz — violin
  • Paul Yarbrough — viola
  • Sandy Wilson — cello

In the ten years that followed his arrival in Vienna, until his death in 1791, Mozart composed more masterworks in more genres than any other composer before or since.

The tragedy of Mozart’s early death is compounded by the fact that during the last years of his life, his music acquired an entirely new level of intensity: polyphonic intensity; developmental intensity; and waste-not-a-single note expressive intensity. And while we cannot know where Mozart’s muse might have taken him had he lived a longer life, we do know that the late quartets and quintets in this series stand as pre-eminent examples of his mature—and transcendent—musical voice.

Mozart Transcendent Concert Program with Andrew Duckles, viola

  • Quartet in D Major, K. 499 “Hoffmeister”
  • Viola Quintet in C Major, K. 515

The Saturday Morning Series is sponsored in part by the Mark D. Kaplanoff Lecture Fund of San Francisco Performances’ Endowment.
