Sangam

Over two nights, tabla master Zakir Hussain reunites with one of his most astonishing ensembles, Sangam, a telepathic trio featuring fellow SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Eric Harland on drums and tenor saxophone giant Charles Lloyd. Powered by an entrancing flow of rhythm from Hussain and Harland, Sangam revels in the joy of exploration and discovery – less a band than an unfettered conversation between three instrumental masterminds. The seeds of the trio were planted in the months following the events of 9/11, when Lloyd first encountered Harland during a cathartic jam session in New York the week of the attacks, and two months later, when the saxophonist performed in duet with Hussain at Grace Cathedral for a “Sacred Space” concert as part of the 2001 San Francisco Jazz Festival. Uniting at a memorial concert for Lloyd’s musical soul mate, the iconic drummer Billy Higgins, the trio’s inaugural performance was recorded and released by ECM Records in 2006. The group name, Sangam, is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning confluence, a coming-together of multiple bodies of water into a single flow, in which one’s sins are flushed away.
