An adventurous jazz saxophonist, Ben Wendel is known for his harmonically sophisticated motivic-style of improvisation and broad compositional style touching upon post-bop, classical and post-rock influences. Wendel first emerged as a member of the forward-thinking ensemble Kneebody in the early 2000’s, earning a Grammy nomination for the group’s 2009 album. As a solo artist he has garnered attention for his own work, including The Seasons, which was inspired by Tchaikovsky’s works of the same name, and features Joshua Redman, Mark Turner, Ambrose Akinmusire and more. The project was listed as one of the best releases of 2015 by the NY Times.
Wendel has performed and/or recorded with artists such as Terrence Blanchard, Bill Frisell, Antonio Sanchez, Gerald Clayton, Snoop Dogg and the artist formerly known as Prince. An ASCAP Jazz Composer Award winner and a recipient of Chamber Music America “New Works Grants,” he was also awarded the Victor Lynch-Staunton award by the Canada Council for The Arts.
