This year’s New Frequencies Fest devotes its entire program to jazz in the present tense. We also pay tribute to the innovations of the 1960s and their impact on contemporary jazz and improvisational music today, with a performance by Henry Threadgill and Ensemble Double-Up (which includes renowned pianists Jason Moran and David Virelles) paying tribute to another significant composer from the jazz avant-garde, Lawrence “Butch” Morris, known for his distinctive form of large-ensemble music built on collective improvisation. Other highlights include a performance by Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Angelique Kidjo; Ben Goldberg’s Orphic Machine; local favorite bassist and composer Lisa Mezzacappa with the world premiere of her avant-NOIR project; and alto saxophonist and interdisciplinary performer Matana Roberts’ Coin Coin, an ode to the stories she grew up hearing about her extended family from its roots in Louisiana and Mississippi, to its participation in the Great Migration north early in the 20th century. .
New Frequencies: Jazz@YBCA spills throughout the YBCA campus Sat, Feb 7, with a variety of offerings, from 50 Cent Tabernacle: Jazz@YBCA — an entire day of dance classes with live accompaniment from John Calloway’s Latin Youth Orchestra — to a solo performance in the galleries by renowned violinist Jenny Scheinman to an evening concert by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and activist Angelique Kidjo.
