For this exclusive performance filmed in January 2020 during the 2019-20 Season, SFJAZZ Poet Laureate and Rockefeller Fellow Marc Bamuthi Joseph collaborated with composer-violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain and street dance pioneer Drew Dollaz in this engaging multimedia work that illuminates the unseen and under-heard experiences of incarcerated youth and the realities their families face. Framed by visually striking photography and animation projections, The Just and the Blind explores themes of racial profiling, sentencing and the prison-industrial complex in a series of short vignettes that include music, dance, and spoken word.
Originally commissioned by Carnegie Hall, the performance includes provocative images by photographer Brittsense, and the illustrative talent of Xia Gordon, woven together by media designer David Szlasa under the direction of Michael Garcés.
