More than a consummate sideman, drummer Eric Harland is the rhythmic catalyst for many of the definitive jazz recordings of the past 15 years, a groove muse whose tidal-force trap work has inspired Greg Osby, Terence Blanchard, Charles Lloyd, McCoy Tyner, Dave Holland, and many other masters. What’s less known is that Harland is also an ambitious composer with a gift for designing extended forms, tunes that provide an ideal forum for volatile group interaction. In the fall of 2010 he released his first album as a leader, Voyager: Live By Night, a quintet session gleaned from a series of 2008 concerts with Taylor Eigsti, Julian Lage, Harish Raghavan, and Water Smith III. He seized attention with the opening track, the modal scorcher “Treachery,” a tune that also opened The Monterey Quartet: Live at the 2007 Monterey Jazz Festival, with Holland, Chris Potter and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Harland’s second installment as a leader, the recently released Vipassana, features an expanded cast and a new set of revelatory originals. For his West Coast debut as a bandleader he’s joined by the original all-star Voyager crew, as formidable and inventive a band as exists today.
