Gypsy people have always functioned as human tape recorders, carrying music from village to village, often delivering it with their own stamp placed gently upon it. This concert for young audiences will explore the original world music, played by modern day nomadic peoples of Europe, as well as by many aficionados around the world. The infectious syncopation and nuttiness of 1930’s Swing Era music, mixed up with the mysterious and magical sounds of fingers flying on acoustic stringed instruments, will conjure visions of caravans and Parisian cafes in the impressionable minds of its young listeners.

There will be no Family Workshop after this matinee performance. Instead, we will host a Master Class for intermediate guitarists and violinists with Gypsy guitar great Dorado Schmitt at 1pm in the Joe Henderson Lab from 1-3pm.

A limited number of free tickets are available to Bay Area school or community groups. If you are interested in bringing your school or community group group to a Family Matinee, please fill out our ticket request form.
