“The peerless North Indian tabla player…favors an impish strain of virtuosity.” — The New York Times

“It’s hard to imagine a better champion for Indian classical music in the West than Zakir Hussain.” — San Jose Mercury News

  • Zakir Hussain — tabla
  • Kumaresh Rajagopalan — Carnatic violin
  • Jayanthi Kumaresh — veena

2014-2015 Resident Artistic Director and tabla genius Zakir Hussain presents a traditional performance of North Indian classical music featuring Carnatic violin virtuoso Kumaresh Rajagopalan and Jayanthi Kumaresh, a renowned master of the veena, the ancient Indian lute.

One half of the renowned violin-playing siblings Ganesh and Kumaresh, Rajagopalan grew up in Kanpur as a true prodigy, giving his first public performance at age five and giving his 100th recital before he was ten. He and his brother were the first Indian violin duo to perform as featured soloists rather than accompanists, and have become world-renowned for their remarkable technique and expressiveness. Ragagopalan, Zakir Hussain says, “belongs to the ranks of great living performers of Indian Music.”

Born to a family of musicians with a legacy stretching seven generations, Jayanthi Kumaresh was also a prodigy, beginning her musical journey with the veena before the age of three. She was one of the youngest artists to receive the A-TOP grading from All India Radio (the highest grade offered by the only grading body in India), and performs worldwide as a veena soloist. In 2011 she founded the Indian National Orchestra, a groundbreaking ensemble of the greatest artists from all regions and musical disciplines throughout India.
