Three of the Bay Area’s greatest vocalists and local guitar legend join the incomparable John Santos Sextet for a fresh installment of “Unusual Standards,” an evening of classic jazz staples, re-imagined and revitalized with the spirit of Latin jazz. Ed Reed’s remarkable career began in earnest with his 2007 debut, released just prior to his 78th birthday! He’s been named Rising Star Vocalist in DownBeat’s Critic’s Poll five times and his last two releases, Born to Be Blue and I’m a Shy Guy, were each selected as a DownBeat Editor’s Pick. The sublime María Márquez straddles the border between world music and jazz, collaborating with John Santos, guitarist Joyce Cooling and producer Frank Harris since her emigrating to the U.S. from her native Venezuela. Soul and blues queen Terrie Odabi is an Oakland native who has lent her distinctive voice to countless projects throughout the Bay Area. Guitarist Calvin Keys is a true giant of the Bay Area jazz scene, whose sparkling career includes nearly two decades with the great Ahmad Jamal, live work with Ray Charles, a stint as musical director for jazz icon Earl “Fatha” Hines and over a dozen vibrant albums as a leader. Since the 1970s, no one has done more to maintain and advance the Bay Area’s singular synthesis of Caribbean rhythms and post-bop forms than percussionist John Santos. A charismatic bandleader, captivating improviser, and dedicated educator, Santos is a master of folkloric traditions from Cuba and Puerto Rico who’s consistently found distinctive ways to merge Latin grooves with jazz orchestration. Don’t miss this celebration of the jazz standard, presented in a decidedly Latin vein.
