Special Guest

Resident Artistic Director Miguel Zenón’s third night in Miner Auditorium showcases his superb quartet featuring pianist Luis Perdomo, bassist Hans Glawischnig and drummer Henry Cole, joined by the explosive Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez. Martinez has become a ubiquitous presence on the New York scene, playing on more than 100 albums, including projects led by Paquito D’Rivera, Issac Delgado, Eliane Elias, Stefon Harris, Steve Turre, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Conrad Herwig, and Brian Lynch and Eddie Palmieri’s Grammy Award-winning CD Simpático. As a bandleader, Martinez has developed a captivating sound steeped in Afro-Cuban rumba and Santeria’s bata beats and chants, but also informed by North American rhythmic currents, an approach that The New York Times described as “complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World funk.” He earned first place in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s first competition focusing on Afro-Latin hand drumming, and he’s been soaring ever since. This very special evening of pulse-pounding jazz is one of the highlights of Season 2!

A founding member of the SFJAZZ Collective, Miguel Zenón is the most celebrated altoist of his generation, a multi Grammy nominee and Guggenheim and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow who has extended jazz’s conceptual reach with a series of albums exploring the music of his native Puerto Rico. Deepening his relationship with SFJAZZ as a Resident Artistic Director, Zenón presents a series of projects that showcase his ever-expanding vision as a composer inspired by West Africa and an ingenious interpreter of the folkloric and popular music of Puerto Rico.
