“Herbie Hancock is the emissary of an art form.” — The New York Times

“With a spirit still eager to stretch into new directions, Hancock still sounds timeless.” — Los Angeles Times

Following his commanding performance during President Obama’s historic 2013 visit to the SFJAZZ Center and receiving a Kennedy Center honor, jazz’s greatest pianist and composer returns to Miner Auditorium accompanied by a truly dizzying band of all-stars. A trailblazing artist whose inimitable touch and telepathic musical intuition has been at the heart of every major musical advance since the early 1960s, Herbie Hancock has always been the art’s most relentless searcher. As a star pianist for Blue Note Records, he recorded with a who’s-who of jazz icons and led a string of essential sessions, penning the standards “Dolphin Dance,” “Cantaloupe Island,” “Watermelon Man” and countless other classics. He turned the jazz world upside down as part of Miles Davis’ epochal ‘60s quintet and freely embraced the electronic revolution, ushering in the birth of the jazz/rock hybrid called fusion and the subsequent development of hip hop. He was named an NEA Jazz Master in 2004.

Herbie Hancock is this year’s recipient of the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award, and will be honored at the SFJAZZ Gala on May 16. On the following two nights, Hancock will be featured in concert with a quartet consisting of Beninese guitar virtuoso Lionel Loueke, superstar bassist and fellow Miles Davis compatriot Marcus Miller, and Vinnie Colaiuta, one of the most influential drummers in modern music. These only-at-SFJAZZ performances will showcase one of the true giants of jazz in the most intimate setting imaginable.
