For a syncopated blast of Yuletide joy, come hear the City Church Little Big Band, a rousing ensemble featuring such sterling Bay Area jazz musicians as saxophonists Harvey Wainapel and Kasey Knudsen, trumpeter Mike Olmos, bassist Marcus Shelby, trombonist Rob Ewing, drummer Jeff Marrs, pianist Adam Shulman and the soulful singers Tiffany Austin and Kenny Washington, a suave balladeer who swoops and scats. Organized at San Francisco’s ecumenical City Church, the Little Big Band serves up funky, finger-popping and stirring renditions of carols and seasonal songs like “Joy to the World,” “We Three Kings,” “Holy Night” and “Hark the Herald.” “Go Tell It!”, the title track of the CD the band released last year, struts in an irresistible “Killer Joe” groove. “Sugar Rum Cherry,” the band’s tart take on “Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy” from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” revels in the sound of early Ellington, with its mysterious tom-toms and swelling horn chords.
