Violinist and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Regina Carter joins the quartet of Argentine piano virtuoso Pablo Ziegler for an evening dedicated to the music of Ziegler’s former employer, tango giant Astor Piazzolla. A towering figure in Argentine music, Ziegler is the most visible and important living proponent of Nuevo Tango, the integration of jazz and classical influences into the classic tango style. Ziegler is a masterful pianist, who performed in the quartet of legendary Nuevo Tango innovator Piazzolla for over a decade, until the maestro’s retirement in 1989. Ziegler played a crucial role on several of Piazzolla’s greatest recordings, including La Camorra, The New Tango and the incomparable Tango: Zero Hour, considered by Piazzolla to be his finest work. In 1990, Ziegler formed his Quintet for New Tango, which has carried on and expanded the legacy of his mentor, and he won a Latin Grammy for the 2005 album Bajo Cero, his collaboration with Argentine guitarist Quique Sinesi. For this special evening, Carter will add her sublime violin voice to Ziegler’s quartet, reprising their sparkling collaboration from 2011 at New York’s Jazz Standard.
About Regina Carter: For Regina Carter, the violin isn’t merely an improvisational vehicle. It’s a passport, unlocking the door to myriad cultures and worlds. Since emerging from the Detroit scene in the late 1980s, Carter has recorded a series of dazzling albums, joining forces with piano giant Kenny Barron on Freefall, celebrating her hometown on Motor City Moments, and breaking new ground with a legendary violin on Paganini: After A Dream. Winner of a coveted 2006 MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Fellowship, she began researching the African roots of the violin, resulting in her acclaimed 2010 recording Reverse Thread, an entrancing sojourn exploring compositions by artists from Kenya, Mali, and Senegal.
