“Regina Carter creates music that is wonderfully listenable, probingly intelligent and, at times, breathtakingly daring…taking the listener into the future of jazz.” — Time Magazine

“Most good violinists will never experience what Sara (Caswell) creates with her instrument. It is beautifully refined emotion that lifts the spirit and at the same time, crystallizes for me this thought: jazz violin could really have something to offer again.” — Violinist Mark O’Connor

Violinist and Resident Artistic Director Regina Carter’s week of programming presents a dizzying array of artistry, beginning with a stunning violin summit featuring Carter, Jenny Scheinman and Sara Caswell. An intrepid musical explorer, Carter has greatly expanded her violin odyssey since being awarded a coveted MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Fellowship. She began researching the African roots of the violin, which resulted in her acclaimed 2010 album Reverse Thread, an entrancing sojourn exploring compositions by artists from Kenya, Mali, and Senegal. Humboldt County native Jenny Sheinman has charted an exploratory course over her musical career. A long-time collaborator with guitarist and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Bill Frisell, Scheinman has worked with a staggering array of musicians including Norah Jones and Aretha Franklin, and released seven acclaimed albums as leader. Her 2005 release, 12 Songs, made The New York Times’ Top 10 Albums list. Sara Caswell is a sublime classical and jazz violinist who made her orchestral debut at age 15. She has been a soloist with the New York Pops Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and performed worldwide with Esperanza Spalding’s Chamber Music Society project. She leads the Sara Caswell Quartet and the Caswell Sisters Quintet, and is a member of the boundary-breaking group Rose & The Nightingale. Join us for this unforgettable evening of violin magic!
