Josh is a terrific temp — but whenever he goes “perm,” horrible things happen. On one temp assignment, at a downtown San Francisco law firm called Schuyler & Mitchell (S&M), he finds himself working for a powerful tax attorney named Bob Shelby. By the time he is asked to go perm for Bob, Josh has begun to suspect that his boss may actually be Satan — but the firm makes him an offer he can’t refuse (insurance coverage for his psychotherapy). Just as Josh begins his stint as Bob’s “permanent” secretary, Bob gives him 85-or-so very important letters to mail out right away — and he doesn’t mail them! He tries to cover up his crime, but somehow things only get worse and worse — eventually leading Josh to a panicked, late-evening break-in, a surprise encounter with a beautiful young “associate,” and a passive-aggressive case of mistaken identity. Haiku Tunnel is a comedy about neurosis, office work, and envelope-moisteners.
After long runs in the Bay Area (at The Marsh and elsewhere), Haiku Tunnel was adapted into a feature film (co-directed by Josh and his brother Jacob) that played at Sundance and was released nationally by Sony Pictures Classics.
Artist Biography
Josh Kornbluth has been doing autobiographical one-man shows since 1989. Many of his pieces were developed at The Marsh, and Josh is thrilled to be returning to this remarkable incubator of theatrical wonderfulness. For two years he was the host of The Josh Kornbluth Show on KQED-TV. He is currently completing his second feature film with his brother Jacob, Love & Taxes; in 2001, the Kornbluth Brothers’ first movie, Haiku Tunnel, went to the Sundance Film Festival and was distributed nationally by Sony Pictures Classics. His second audiobook, titled Ben Franklin: Unplugged … and Other Comic Tales, was just released by Audible.com. Two of his one-man shows, Red Diaper Baby and The Mathematics of Change, are available on DVD. Lately he’s been a visiting professor at Stanford, teaching a course in “The Ethics of Storytelling.” Josh lives in Berkeley with his wife and son.
