The tour-de-force performance by Jessie Proksa includes original music, conceptual, wearable art, and draws in audience members to become part of the performance. “I’m Not From Here,” features Proksa’s alter ego Sylax (a time traveling explorer trapped in outer space), and his “space suit,” more a character than a prop. It is a physical manifestation of outer protection and inner vulnerability. The modern day adventure/survival tale culminates in a conversation with God at the Western Idaho Fair.
Proksa’s performance explores themes of technology, leaving home, the search for freedom, connectivity, and spirituality. “Life is an adventure,” says Proksa. “Overcoming fear frees us and allows us to start living our lives on a deeper more meaningful level.” About the all-important space suit she says: “It is the inspiration for jokes, it aids survival, records experience, and is a metaphor for the construction of identity and personal empowerment.”
About Jessica Proksa
Jessie Proksa graduated with her MFA from CalArts in 2003, and has been working steadily toward her life-long dream of becoming a performance artist ever since she started playing the cello at age 11. Twenty-nine years later she is still playing the cello, and after doing stand up comedy in Boise, and attending Stand Up 101, Comedic Songwriting, Improv, and Storytelling, on a grant from Second City, Chicago in 2013, she decided she was ready to take it to the next level. She is looking forward to premiering her first major solo performance, I’m Not From Here, at the Hollywood Fringe Festival.
