ONLINE BROADCAST (Recorded: NOV 11, 2019)
“A magical mash-up of The Queen of Latin Music, Celia Cruz, and The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin” (NPR). With a voice possessed of equal parts grace and fire, Daymé Arocena has become one of the dynamic new faces of Cuban music, versed in jazz, Cuban neo-soul, and West African traditions.
Brought to the world stage by Canadian saxophone great Jane Bunnett as part of her Juno-winning Maqueque project, the singer came to the attention of taste-making British DJ Gilles Peterson, who signed Arocena to his Brownswood label and released her 2015 debut Nueva Era — listed among NPR Music’s Top 50 albums of the year. Following her 2017-2018 Season double bill with Cuban piano genius Roberto Fonseca, she returned for this performance in November 2019 with music from her latest Brownswood release, Sonocardiogram.
