Mothers: figures in the lives of all – whether one associates positive, negative, joyful, or complex feelings with their own mother. Yet, Mother’s Day celebrations often don’t provide an adequate platform for exploring these relationships. For its season finale, Emerald City Music combines film and live music to explore the true, diverse stories of Pacific Northwesterners that coalesce to define “mother.” These challenging, inspirational accounts – as told by the community and captured by Carlin Ma in an ECM-commissioned film – are presented alongside works by Antonín Dvořák, Johannes Brahms, Anna Clyne, and more, giving a musical voice to this ubiquitous theme.
