Special Guest

For this exclusive SFJAZZ-only performance, GRAMMY-winning trumpeter Doc Severinsen performs with the supercharged band led by master drummer Tommy Igoe. Leader of the Tonight Show Orchestra for 25 years, Severinsen is one of the most famous jazz musicians in the world, having appeared every weeknight on Johnny Carson’s iconic late night talk show. A native of Arlington, Oregon, Severinsen began trumpet studies at seven, beginning his professional career while still in high school. He toured with the bands of Charlie Barnett, Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman before becoming a staff musician at NBC in 1949 – joining The Tonight Show in 1962 and becoming Music Director five years later. He remained with the show until Carson’s retirement in 1992, releasing over 30 albums.

Led by one of the most in-demand drummers and educators in the world, the hard-hitting Tommy Igoe Big Band boasts many of the finest Bay Area instrumentalists, including trumpeter and Pacific Mambo Orchestra leader Steffen Kuehn, Tower of Power tenor saxophonist Tom Politzer, and Doobie Brothers alto saxophonist Marc Russo. The son of acclaimed big band drummer Sonny Igoe, Tommy began drumming at the age of two and has worked with an impressive range of artists including Dave Grusin, the New York Voices, and Stanley Jordan, among others. He originated the drum and percussion book for Disney’s Broadway smash The Lion King, and has penned a number of highly influential drumming method books. This meeting of the Bay Area’s best large ensemble and a true legend of the music is a match made in big band heaven.
