“For 90 minutes, one could feel the band feeding off the skaters’ energy, and vice versa. One also could sense a shared aesthetic: You improvise a statement, taking risks, failing, falling — and then you build that setback into your next statement, expanding the vocabulary, advancing the form.” — San Jose Mercury News

The Bandwagon

  • Jason Moran — piano, keyboards
  • Tarus Mateen — bass
  • Nasheet Waits — drums

Skateboarders — TBD

Resident Artistic Director Jason Moran closes his week by reprising his sold-out Season 1 collaboration with the Bay Area skateboarding community, a landmark two-night event that earned widespread recognition and was the talk of the jazz and skating worlds. When originally asked about ideas for his residency, Moran recalled the deeply entrenched skateboarding tradition he discovered when visiting the Bay Area as a youth, and realized that a combination of skating and jazz would be a unique and fitting tribute to San Francisco. For these two magical evenings, Moran’s Bandwagon combo with bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits performs along side a who’s-who of Bay Area skating luminaries who will take flight on a specially constructed skating half-pipe installed in front of the Miner Auditorium stage. If you missed this thrilling blend of visual and aural magic when it premiered in Season 1, be sure to get your tickets early. These shows will sell out quickly!

About Jason Moran
An ambitiously creative musician who won DownBeat magazine’s triple crown for Jazz Artist, Pianist and Album of the Year in 2011, Jason Moran is jazz’s wild card, a probing conceptualist who transforms everything he touches into a bracingly contemporary statement. Recipient of the coveted MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship in 2010 and the new Kennedy Center Artistic Advisor for Jazz, the 37-year-old pianist has developed at an exponential rate in the company of his supremely flexible quartet the Bandwagon, honing an approach that soaks up influences and reconfigures them to suit his own exacting needs. As a Resident Artistic Director, the multi-faceted Moran is performing in a wide-ranging array of settings.
