“The most provocative thinker in current jazz.” — Rolling Stone on Jason Moran

“a seeking, spiritual artist of breadth and depth.” — DownBeat on Charles Lloyd

“What Lloyd and Moran share is an unerring ability to get to the emotional heart of a song.” — JazzTimes

Night two of Jason Moran’s week pairs the modern piano master with saxophone icon Charles Lloyd, one of Moran’s musical mentors and leader of the acclaimed New Chares Lloyd Quartet, with whom the pianist has performed since 2007. Lloyd attained rock star status in the mid-60s with one of the all-time great quartets, featuring Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette. Since the release of that group’s Dream Weaver and Forest Flower, Lloyd has charted a remarkable trajectory as one of the most restlessly inventive musicians in jazz history. His sublime 2013 duet recording with Moran, Hagar’s Song, contains a mixture of re-imagined standards, pop gems and the title suite dedicated Lloyd’s great-great-grandmother, who was sold into slavery in the early 1800s. This album will be the jumping-off point for Lloyd and Moran, who have developed an instrumental telepathy that makes each shared moment into a poignant revelation.

About Jason Moran
An ambitiously creative musician who won DownBeat magazine’s triple crown for Jazz Artist, Pianist and Album of the Year in 2011, Jason Moran is jazz’s wild card, a probing conceptualist who transforms everything he touches into a bracingly contemporary statement. Recipient of the coveted MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship in 2010 and the new Kennedy Center Artistic Advisor for Jazz, the 37-year-old pianist has developed at an exponential rate in the company of his supremely flexible quartet the Bandwagon, honing an approach that soaks up influences and reconfigures them to suit his own exacting needs. As a Resident Artistic Director, the multi-faceted Moran is performing in a wide-ranging array of settings.
