Resident Artistic Director Miguel Zenón’s third night in Miner Auditorium showcases his superb quartet featuring pianist Luis Perdomo, bassist Hans Glawischnig and drummer Henry Cole, joined by a rising world music superstar, Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza. The São Paulo-raised singer is deeply versed in jazz improvisation as well as her native Brazilian idioms. Beginning as a studio artist, she was a recording veteran by 16, and her career quickly took off as she began collaborating with jazz masters including Danilo Pérez, Fred Hersch and John Patitucci. Today Souza easily ranks as one of Brazil’s greatest singers, winning a Grammy for her contribution to Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters. Her latest albums (released simultaneously) include a tribute to West Coast trumpet icon Chet Baker entitled Book of Chet, and Duos III, a CD of duet recordings with guitarists Romero Lubambo, Marco Pereira and Toninho Horta. The partnership between Zenón and Souza goes back a decade, when the singer’s entrancing wordless vocals appeared on the track “Transfiguration” from Zenón’s 2004 recording Ceremonial. This reunion promises to recapture the magic of that first meeting.
A founding member of the SFJAZZ Collective, Miguel Zenón is the most celebrated altoist of his generation, a multi Grammy nominee and Guggenheim and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow who has extended jazz’s conceptual reach with a series of albums exploring the music of his native Puerto Rico. Deepening his relationship with SFJAZZ as a Resident Artistic Director, Zenón presents a series of projects that showcase his ever-expanding vision as a composer inspired by West Africa and an ingenious interpreter of the folkloric and popular music of Puerto Rico.
