“The highest echelon of jazz tenor saxophonists.” — Los Angeles Times
“Marsalis stands as one of the most imposing tenor and soprano saxophonists in jazz today, the comprehensive nature of his virtuosity matched by the substantive quality of his tunes.” — Chicago Tribune
- Branford Marsalis — saxophones
- Joey Calderazzo — piano
- Eric Revis — bass
- Justin Faulkner — drums
Among his many distinctions, NEA Jazz Master Branford Marsalis is quite simply one of jazz’s most potent and expressive saxophonists, equally commanding on tenor and soprano. As the eldest musical sibling in jazz’s most famous contemporary clan, he is also an esteemed educator, composer for theater, film and of course jazz settings, and founder of the essential label Marsalis Music. An uncompromising artist and three-time Grammy winner, Marsalis’ insatiable desire to expand horizons has found him performing with the New York Philharmonic, embracing hip hop influences with his Buckshot LaFonque project, and working in the pop realm with Sting and Bruce Hornsby. He won a 2010 Drama Desk Award for his contribution to the Broadway production of August Willson’s Fences. But he’s best known as the leader of this extraordinary quartet, a group that plays dauntingly intricate and breathtakingly dynamic music. A powerfully kinetic sound that entails navigating odd meters and eye-blink tempo shifts, it’s an approach captured on Marsalis’s latest CD Four MFs Playin’ Tunes.
