Bill Frisell’s third night as Resident Artistic Director is a delightful live multi-media collaboration between Frisell’s Beautiful Dreamers trio and influential Seattle-based cartoonist and animator Jim Woodring. For this special performance, Woodring will create live digital illustrations, projected on the Miner Auditorium video screen, to accompany and inspire the music.
Composed of Frisell on guitar and electronics with violist Eyvind Kang and drummer Rudy Royston, Beautiful Dreamers is an incredibly dynamic and fluid trio, deeply rooted in the blues and possessed of an unshakable groove. Their self-titled debut album was issued on the Savoy Jazz label in 2010. Eyvind Kang is a multi-faceted composer and performer who has released over a dozen albums and contributed to works by Lou Reed and Animal Collective. He has collaborated with Frisell on numerous projects going back nearly two decades. Like Frisell himself, Rudy Royston was raised in Denver, working with trumpeter and frequent Frisell compatriot Ron Miles while in college. Since moving to New York, the in-demand drummer has regularly recorded and performed with ensembles led by Javon Jackson, Ravi Coltrane and the Mingus Big Band.
Jim Woodring is an acclaimed artist and animator, known best for his character Frank, who has appeared in a number of graphic novels and in his previous multi-media collaboration with Frisell, 2006’s Probability Cloud. The Comics Journal named two of Woodring’s creations to their list of 100 Best Comics of the Century, and his previous work with Frisell resulted in a United States Artists Fellowship.
