A pop star, film composer and cultural activist, Pino Daniele has helped define the music of his culturally vibrant region by embracing a global array of traditions.
A proud son of southern Italy, the singer, songwriter and guitarist sparked the Neapolitan music movement in the mid-1970s with a blues-inflected Mediterranean sound. Over the years he’s continued to expand his sonic palette, creating a highly personal, passionately lyrical body of work blending his Neapolitan roots with pop, blues, jazz, and Middle Eastern influences. Born into a working class family, Daniele grew up studying classical and traditional Neapolitan guitar, though British and American rock caught his ear as a teenager. His epochal 1977 debut album Terra Mia introduced his new taramblù sound, a combination of tarantella, rhumba, and blues. Subsequent albums found the restlessly creative artist seeking out new sources of inspiration from various Mediterranean, North African, and Western sources, such as his highly regarded 1983 collaboration with Richie Havens, Common Ground, and work with American jazz artists Wayne Shorter and Weather Report bassist Alphonso Johnson. Daniele’s hit 2012 studio session La Grande Madre featured jazz luminaries Omar Hakim and Rachel Z., and his new live outing, Tutta N’ata Storia, was recently released.
