“Schwartz has a classic clear-throated tenor sound and kicks like a mule.” — JazzTimes

“Warm, generous tone, impeccably developed solos and infectious performance energy.” — San Francisco Chronicle

Tenor saxophonist Anton Schwartz is a guiding light of both the Bay Area and national jazz scenes. A New York City native, Schwartz set off on his musical trajectory early, studying with Eddie Daniels and Warne Marsh in his early teens and forming a band with future jazz stars Peter Bernstein and Larry Goldings while the three were still in high school. A fiery and melodic player influenced by Wayne Shorter and Coltrane, he occupied the first tenor chair of the Harvard Jazz Band, following Don Braden and preceding Joshua Redman, and after graduating magna with a mathematics degree, he moved west for graduate work at Stanford. Schwartz firmly established himself in the San Francisco jazz scene and chose to pursue a life of music over science, quickly forming bonds with renowned Bay Area artists including pianist Mark Levine as well as singers Kitty Margolis and Ed Kelly. Schwartz has released four albums as a leader and is a respected educator, teaching at Stanford Jazz Workshop, Berkeley’s JazzSchool and the Brubeck Institute in Stockton. This solo performance will showcase the commanding tone and boundless creativity of a masterful jazz artist.
