Thollem McDonas’ solo piano work represents years of practice and study, as well as obsessive curiosity, experimentation, perpetual traveling and the many collaborations throughout his lifetime. His compositions and improvisations articulate integrations and collisions of influences from the wide array of musical approaches and experiences that have informed, defined and inspired him. Throughout it all he has been delving into the piano, excavating depths of sound and energy through a torrent of wildly diverse sonic worlds.
“Listening to Thollem McDonas play the piano is an astonishing experience. He explores the depth and range of the instrument like no one else. ‘Meeting At The Parting Place’ will take you on journeys across varied landscapes that flow effortlessly from one to the next — somehow emerging logically even in their unpredictability. In Terry Riley’s own words, he is ‘a true original’.” — Excerpt from liner notes by Joan Jeanrenaud: Composer, Cellist (Kronos Quartet cellist 1978-98)
