This year’s mid-winter viol consort show takes the form of a battle between the two Titans of early 17th century viol music: William Lawes and John Jenkins.
Lawes and Jenkins were colleagues for a decade or more, but with radically different styles: Jenkins played by the rules with transcendent creativity. Lawes broke the rules, forever experimenting. Both were viol virtuosi, hugely popular composers whose music challenged the players.
“Jenkins or Lawes?” has become a thing, as in “Beatles or Stones?”, “Mezcal or Scotch?”, “Taylor Swift or Beyonce?” We are presenting an entire concert with just these two apex composers: you can choose, or choose to stay on the fence, as you like.
