The White Album (TWA) a bold, unprecedented, and messy double LP. Superficially the antithesis of the extravagant Sgt. Pepper, TWA’s stark white cover embodied an encyclopedia of songwriting style and structure and Pepper-style advanced studio production. It represents a new Beatles chapter: Apple’s 1st LP; the end of psychedelia; the entrance of Yoko Ono and 8-track recording.
Stress from Apple Corps. adversely affected the Fab’s relationships and collaboration, stories of strife and unhappiness during it’s long gestation were legion. But recent scholarship and 2018’s box set have revealed many previously unknown warm collaborative moments prompting reassessment of the album’s artistic brilliance and process.
Mus 48 Explores: The band’s prolific Indian pilgrimage; the Esher Demos; intense recording sessions and resignations; Apple’s early triumph; the explosion of musical, cultural, and political influences. We discuss the studio process, equipment, techniques, and songwriting. Live online.
