During her 40-year career, Terri Lyne Carrington has established herself as one of the most respected and in-demand drummers in jazz. Just ask Herbie Hancock. Or Wayne Shorter. Or Esperanza Spalding. Or the National Endowment for the Arts, which awarded her the title of NEA Jazz Master in 2021. Carrington keeps evolving: She is increasingly busy as a composer, educator, bandleader, and producer — and as an advocate for gender equality in jazz. Constantly pushing her horizons, she brings a typically varied and cutting-edge suite of programs to SFJAZZ in her second season as Resident Artistic Director.
