Sumkali started in 2009 playing a monthly Indian music night at the Crazy Wisdom Tearoom downtown Ann Arbor. The chemistry and intoxicating sound of the group has propelled them to become a premier music group in Michigan. They have worked with the prestigious University Music Society, the North American Bengali Conference, and the Center for South Asian Studies at the University of Michigan. Sumkali presents classical Indian music tradition with the musical colorings of jazz and funk.
