Celebrate the expansion of Stanford’s Arts District at our Modern Jazz Showcase and open house! Start your evening at the newly opened Anderson Collection at Stanford University, where you’ll view one of the world’s most outstanding assemblies of American modern and contemporary art while a Stanford student combo plays jazz outside. Afterwards, join a parade led by the Bourbon Kings Brass Band down Museum Way. Finish off the night at a Bing Concert Hall patio party with the Marcus Shelby Quartet. Enjoy the music of Coltrane, Monk, Mingus, and more as you make art and nosh from Off the Grid’s food trucks.

Marcus Shelby is an accomplished teacher, composer, arranger, and bassist. Shelby is the Artistic Director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Orchestra, The Marcus Shelby Hot 7, and The Marcus Shelby Trio. He has had the honor of arranging for and conducting the Count Basie Orchestra featuring Ledisi, performing and recording with Tom Waits, and receiving the City Flight Magazine 2005 award as one of the “Top Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area.”

Born from the brass band traditions of New Orleans, Bourbon Kings Brass Band leads a musical path into the future with its mixture of old and new. The group brings a party infused with the flavors of Bourbon Street, Jazz, R&B and Soul. Led by drummer Jaz Sawyer, from the 2nd Line to the stage, they have been featured in venues near and far, including the San Francisco Jazz Festival.

Co-presented by Stanford Live and the Anderson Collection at Stanford University.

Generously funded by The Koret Foundation, the Koret Jazz Project is a multi-year initiative to support, expand, and celebrate the role of jazz in the artistic and education programming of Stanford Live.
