Soul Force hits Pasadena with an explosion of performers from around the world celebrating the relevance and power of nonviolent action today. This interfaith celebration of ritual world music, dynamic speakers and social and climate organizations will fill two stages and an outdoor patio at the historic Methodist church on Colorado Boulevard in downtown Pasadena.
Civil Rights icon Rev. James Lawson will offer a keynote address on ‘resurrecting the spirit of nonviolence’. Artists include Sufi qawwali by Fanna Fi Allah, Indian raga music by the Gundecha Brothers, Moroccan trance music by Innov Gnawa, Filipino sacred chants by Grace Nono, and Hawaiian songs of nonviolent resistance by Starr Kalahiki and The Liliʻu Project and Palestinian pianist Donia Jarrar. The Arohi Ensemble will present an east/west ragajazz world premiere joined by 50 singers of the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus – Young Men’s Ensemble, along with the transcendent vocals of LA’s own jazz vocal visionary Dwight Trible and Columbian woodwind legend Justo Almario.
