Master drummer Terri Lyne Carrington brings her power-packed, GRAMMY-winning celebration of women in jazz featuring several of the greatest vocalists and instrumentalists on the scene today, including vocalists Lizz Wright and Nona Hendryx, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, saxophonist Tia Fuller and pianist Helen Sung. A musical prodigy championed as a youth by legendary drumming figures Buddy Rich and Jack DeJohnette, Carrington gave her first major performance with trumpet icon Clark Terry at age 10, and at 11 received a full scholarship to Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. By the 1990s, the drummer was a veteran of work with a staggering list of jazz greats, and over the ensuing years she has become a respected bandleader, an in-demand producer, and songwriting partner. She had lengthy tenures with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, and has been collaborating with Esperanza Spalding in her band as well as the virtuoso ACS Trio with Spalding and pianist Geri Allen. In 2011, Carrington released The Mosaic Project, a triumphant melding of jazz and modern R&B that brought together a stunning group of female singers and instrumentalists including Hendryx, Jensen, Spalding, Dianne Reeves, Gretchen Parlato, Sheila E., Dee Dee Bridgewater Cassandra Wilson and others. The record won the GRAMMY for “Best Jazz Vocal Album” and is revisited by this incredible band.
