San Francisco Bay Area saxophone luminary Howard Wiley pays tribute to tenor giant Coleman Hawkins and the cross-section of his timeless music contained on the superb 1939-1956 compilation album Body and Soul. Grandson of Count Basie saxophonist Sam Wiley, Howard Wiley was a prodigy who first demonstrated his musical aptitude for piano at age 3 and picked up the saxophone at 11, releasing his debut recording only four years later. He received a scholarship from the Thelonious Monk Institute and recorded three superb albums as leader, including his latest, 12 Gates to the City, a follow-up to his acclaimed The Angola Project, which was inspired by the spirituals and slave chants from Louisiana’s Angola Prison. Wiley worked extensively with Marcus Shelby’s Jazz Orchestra and is currently performing all over the world as a member of Lavay Smith’s Red Hot Skillet Lickers.
