Even on a scene with an abundance of brilliant pianists, conservatory-trained 31-year-old Cuban keyboard maestro Harold López-Nussa stands out as a particularly electrifying artist. A player of astonishing gifts, combining dazzling technique and an abundance of soul, López-Nussa has fully integrated his classical training and love of the jazz continuum with his Cuban roots. Hailing from an illustrious musical family, he first gained international attention when he won top honors at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005. While touring widely with the Buena Vista Social Club vocalist Omara Portuondo from 2008-2011 he launched his solo career as the leader of a superlative trio with his younger brother, drummer Ruy Adrián López-Nussa – the telepathic band he brings to SFJAZZ. Currently a member of the all-star Cuban combo Maraca & The Monterey Latin Jazz All-Stars, he made in indelible impression with 2011’s Ninety Miles, the all-star Cuban/American project with trumpeter Christian Scott, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, and SFJAZZ Collective saxophonist David Sánchez. The same year, Sánchez joined forces with López-Nussa’s trio on the electrifying album El País de las Maravillas, giving them plenty of material to draw on for this eagerly anticipated reunion.
Since his early exposure with Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra, Puerto Rican tenor saxophone virtuoso David Sánchez has become a one of the most celebrated instrumentalists in jazz, recording nine albums as a leader and winning a Latin GRAMMY Award for his 2004 orchestral session, Coral. The five-time GRAMMY nominee has performed with a roster of greats including Charlie Haden, Eddie Palmieri, Roy Haynes, Tom Harrell and countless others.
