With this new show called Shakespeare, Pimps and Hollywood, acclaimed writer, director and actor Robert Townsend returns to his stand-up comedy roots in this one man show about his life growing up as a kid on Chicago’s rough Westside, running home everyday from gangbangers, thugs and pimps, then blossoming into a young actor doing theatre in Chicago, struggling in New York City doing theatre, stand up comedy and learning life lessons that would change him forever. Townsend shares his Hollywood journey, making his first film on credit cards while running from the police because he was shooting without permits, his disastrous screening of his first film Hollywood Shuffle for Eddie Murphy, the invite from Frank Sinatra to his 77th birthday party that he couldn’t refuse, then finding himself in a Goodfellas movie being heckled by Don Rickles, meeting the legendary director Elia Kazan and almost loosing his life for it and the call from Sidney Poitier that broke his heart. Townsend’s stories will take you on an unbelievable rollercoaster ride, through his failures, his roadblocks and finally his triumphs. In this show, Townsend transforms into a modern day vaudevillian, acting, singing, dancing and doing impressions. This is an evening not to be missed, it will truly inspire the dreamer in you.
