The latest project from the brilliant trumpeter and composer Newsweek praised for his “pure melodic genius,” Tom Harrell’s Colors of a Dream is a captivating piano-less sextet with two bassists — one of them the stellar Esperanza Spalding – and invigorating music by one of jazz’s most admired artists. Famed for the burnished warmth and melodic grace and freedom of his trumpet and flugelhorn playing, Harrell is a frequent winner of the DownBeat and JazzTimes magazines’ critics and readers polls, and over the last 40 years has played with by some of jazz’s greatest artists, among them Bill Evans, Horace Silver, Art Farmer, Woody Herman, Phil Woods, Cassandra Wilson and Joe Lovano. A prolific recording artist and composer who has written for big band, symphony and chamber groups, Harrell premiered his arrangements of Impressionist music by Ravel and Debussy in 2011 with the Tom Harrell Chamber Ensemble, and works actively with his TRIP quartet (featuring saxophonist Mark Turner) and the acclaimed Tom Harrell Quartet, of which Colors of a Dream is an expanded version. An impressive range of artists have played and recorded Harrell’s work, including Carlos Santana, Kenny Barron and the Danish Radio Big Band.
