To formally dedicate our 100-seat Joe Henderson Lab, named for the iconic saxophonist and longtime San Francisco resident, we are pleased to present a week of performances that pay tribute to many of the greatest recorded moments in his illustrious career. Each night, the Bay Area’s best jazz artists will recreate music from Henderson’s life, both his own albums as well as records by other jazz legends that benefitted from his singular genius. The week will also feature special guests and other surprises!
The Joe Henderson Hotplate Festival concludes Sunday with a performance of Henderson’s GRAMMY-winning 1992 Verve album Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn by acclaimed Bay Area saxophonist Michael Zilber. Praised by The New York Times as being “as close to artistic genius as jazz gets nowadays,” Lush Life is Henderson’s enduring late-career landmark, hitting #1 on Billboard’s jazz chart upon its release and featuring a quintet of rising young instrumentalists who rose to become established leaders on their own, including trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, pianist Stephen Scott, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Gregory Hutchinson.
