“Trafficking in a free-flowing blend of jazz, hip-hop and Afrobeat, the group can resemble the world’s funkiest marching band one minute, an unhinged New Orleans funeral procession the next.” — Los Angeles Times

“A huge brass bridge of genuinely hypnotic polyphony connecting the cosmic jazz of Sun Ra’s Arkestra with the urgency of hip hop and the sweeping emotional scale of a Curtis Mayfield blaxploitation opus.” — FADER

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

  • Gabriel “Hudah” Hubert, Amal “Baji” Hubert, Jafar “Yosh” Graves, Tarik “Smoove” Graves — trumpet
  • Seba “Clef” Graves and Saiph “Cid” Graves — trombone
  • Uttama “Rocco” Hubert — baritone horn
  • TBA — drums

It’s a common perception that the brass band tradition is centered in New Orleans, but one of the most acclaimed and pulse-pounding brass groups on the scene hails from the south side of Chicago. A true “band of brothers,” the members of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble have a deep musical pedigree as the sons of Chicago jazz trumpeter Kelan Phil Cohran, known for his work with jazz giant Sun Ra and his role in the development of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Since forming in 1999 and busking in train stations, the band has been on a rocket ride to major name status, performing around the globe with R&B stars Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Prince and Wu Tang Clan as well as rock headliners Blur and the B-52s. Their song “War” was featured in the soundtrack of the smash film The Hunger Games, and they collaborated with Blur’s Damon Albarn, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea and Afrobeat drumming icon Tony Allen on Albarn’s Rocket Juice & the Moon project. Hypnotic freely mix the brass band tradition with generous doses of hip hop, soul and funk, creating an intoxicating and boisterous blend that is just barely contained on their newest release Fly: The Customs Prelude.

For this explosive night, the Bourbon Kings Brass Band, a home-brewed assemblage of Bay Area all-stars led by clarinet master Rob Barics and renowned drummer Jaz Sawyer, joins Hypnotic. The Bourbon Kings were featured performers at the Grand Opening of the SFJAZZ Center and shared the stage with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band during the 2011 SFJAZZ Spring Season.
