Groundbreaking composer and performer Zoë Keating creates a universe of music with just a cello, a laptop computer and her own boundless imagination. A prodigy who began cello studies at the age of eight, the Canadian-born Keating worked extensively in the tech industry while performing at night with various rock bands, eventually ditching the day job and combining her formidable musical and technological skills into a visionary hybrid in which layers of cello are combined to form deeply evocative webs of melody and harmony. She has lent her sublime musicianship to a gamut of artists including Amanda Palmer, Thomas Dolby, Pomplamoose, DJ Shadow, Dan Hicks, and Curt Smith of Tears For Fears, and worked extensively for film, television and radio, contributing to the soundtrack of the hit show Breaking Bad and NPR’s Radiolab. Rather than rely a record label, Keating has employed a wildly successful DIY approach for her career, selling 60,000 copies of her self-produced recordings Into The Trees, One Cello x 16: Natoma and One Cello X 16 (EP). This evening promises an experience like no other – a performance by a singular artist exploring an enchanted territory where passion and technology dance in perfect sync.
