“Better than anyone at mixing the sensibilities of post-60’s jazz and indie rock…” — The New York Times
“…high art, not pop gimmickry…The Bad Plus embrace sonic adventure without selfish avant-gardism…seething with funky new-millennium rhythms and succulent harmonic flights. “ — Entertainment Weekly
- Ethan Iverson — piano
- Reid Anderson — bass
- Dave King — drums
A uniquely audacious trio that has crossed into the mainstream to draw jazz fans and rock aficionados alike, the irreverent band of musical outlaws known as The Bad Plus rose to fame about a decade ago by transforming pop and rock anthems like Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” and Queen’s “We Are the Champions” into epic improvisational journeys. But the trio has always played more original material than covers, and the band’s 2012 album, Made Possible, focused exclusively on new pieces contributed by all three musicians. Never content to follow expectations of what a jazz trio can do, their latest project, The Rite of Spring, is a genre-smashing arrangement of one of the most influential and controversial works of the 20th century, Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring). Whatever the origins of the tunes they explore, The Bad Plus has developed a singular group concept and sound that makes for a thrilling ride. Rather than playing a theme and then taking a round of solos, the trio rides the tidal surge of Dave King’s drum work, with the entire ensemble constantly shaping a piece’s form and flow. Known for radically altering their sets from night to night, they will present The Rite of Spring along with selections from their repertoire on Thursday and Sunday, while focusing on material from their forthcoming release on Friday and Saturday. The Bad Plus is, in the words of Rolling Stone, “about as badass as highbrow gets.”
