“The biggest phenomenon to hit Brazilian popular music in years.” — The New York Times

“Rita is… a tropical storm that occasionally softens to a bracing offshore breeze without ever losing power.” — JazzTimes

No Brazilian artist in recent memory has ascended as quickly as vocalist Maria Rita. But as the child of two masters of the music, you could say she was born to the country’s dazzling musical firmament. When Rita won a Latin Grammy trifecta in 2004, including the award for Best New Artist, she seemed to fulfill her birthright as the daughter of late, legendary bossa nova vocalist Elis Regina and the brilliant pianist, arranger and composer Cesar Camargo Mariano. The triple-triumph cemented her status as one of Brazil’s biggest stars, a jazz-inflected singer with a silky, translucent sound evoking the golden age of 1970s popular Brazilian music. But considering that Rita lived in the U.S. through most of the 1990s, it’s not surprising that she also claims close creative kinship with American icons such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nat “King” Cole and Frank Sinatra. Over her meteoric rise, Rita has released a series of hit albums and collaborated with masters like Milton Nascimento and Jorge Drexler. The title of her latest album, Redescobrir, translates to “rediscover.” It is a tour-de-force live recording that pays tribute to the musical legacy of Rita’s mother, and serves as a tantalizing preview of her long-awaited SFJAZZ Center debut, one of only two stateside appearances this year.
