“Soul is a quality that can’t be bought or borrowed, faked or sold, which probably explains why Mary Stallings has emerged once again as one of the most distinctive and compelling jazz singers on the scene.” — DownBeat
“Pianist Eric Reed has a striking, identifiable style that is expressive and swinging yet can also be lyrical or introspective.” — JazzTimes
- Mary Stallings – vocals
- Eric Reed – piano
Each generation, it seems, discovers Mary Stallings anew. A supremely soulful jazz singer, the San Francisco native has appeared alongside jazz greats including Cal Tjader, Dizzy Gillespie and the Count Basie Orchestra. With her supple sense of swing, blues-inflected phrasing, and gift for empathic interpretation, it’s easy to see why The New York Times declared her “perhaps the best jazz singer alive today.” Stallings has a long history with SFJAZZ, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at our 2011 Gala and performing during the historic Opening Night concert at the SFJAZZ Center. For the second show of her two-night return to the Miner Auditorium stage, she’s paired with the superb pianist Eric Reed. Reed has established himself as one of the most respected and prodigious keyboardists in jazz, becoming a member of Wynton Marsalis’ various ensembles out of high school before launching a solo career that encompasses over 20 acclaimed albums and concert appearances all over the world. This extraordinary pairing of Stallings and Reed promises an evening of rare beauty — and one you can only find at SFJAZZ.
