A 360-degree, super-practical, hands-on course covering the administrative aspects of running your musical life, taught by a musician/bandleader/arts administrator who’s been in the trenches for more than a dozen years.
Topics include:
- Communicating about your music: writing bios, band blurbs, concert descriptions
- Fundraising: grant-writing, budgeting, and project management
- Promotion and publicity: writing press releases, pitching the media, assembling an Electronic Press Kit (EPK)
- Creating a marketing strategy for a concert or record release
- Plus more topics (releasing records, booking shows, touring, etc.) based on student interest
Instructor: Lisa Mezzacappa
In a storied career as an academic, journalist, arts administrator and independent musician, Lisa Mezzacappa has been communicating about the arts, in different formats, for nearly 20 years. She was a critic and arts reporter for a daily newspaper in New York before pursing a degree in ethnomusicology at UC Berkeley. She subsequently worked at New Langton Arts and Stanford Lively Arts, and has been a freelance copywriter, publicist, grant-writer and marketing consultant for Cal Performances, the Mondavi Center, Oakland Ballet, Kronos Quartet and InterMusic SF. As a composer and ensemble leader, she has been awarded grants from the MAP Fund, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Aaron Copland Fund, InterMusic SF, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, the Wattis Foundation, American Composers Forum and the City of Oakland.
