“The biggest pop star of the West African nation of Mali” (Rolling Stone), guitarist and singer Koité has headlined festivals around the world with his infectious blend of rock-influenced Afropop, releasing nine chart-topping albums and working with artists ranging from African vocal superstar Oumou Sangaré to Eric Bibb, Bonnie Raitt, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. For this February 2019 appearance, Koité was joined by Malian percussionist Mama Kone in an intimate duo performance.
Hailing from the line of Khassonké griots and a pioneering instrumentalist, Koité has adapted the tuning and playing style of the Malian n’goni lute to the Western acoustic guitar, expanding its possibilities and innovating a fresh, unheard approach to traditional song forms. He and Kone perform music from his 25-year career, including material from his latest album, 2017’s Kharifa.
