“One of the greatest musicians in jazz… a pianist of almost supernatural abilities” (The New York Times), Gonzalo Rubalcaba is the most celebrated Cuban pianist of his generation, a virtuoso of jaw-dropping technical command whose improvisational prowess helped pave the way for the brilliant wave of Latin American jazz musicians that followed in his wake. One of them was Cuban conguero Pedrito Martinez, who’s played an essential role infusing Afro-Cuban currents into American music since settling in New York City in 1998, recording and performing with artists including Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, and Sting. This performance, filmed in September 2017 at the start of our 2017-18 Season, is a telepathic duo encounter and an intoxicating journey into the thrumming heart of Cuban rhythm.

The coronavirus separates us, threatening the fabric of community – but music connects, which is why we’ve launched Fridays at Five. It’s what we need right now: a new series of weekly pre-recorded concerts that aspire to connect you – to music, to musicians, to the warm and unique feeling of experiencing live music at the SFJAZZ Center.
For just $5 a month ($60 annually), you can become a Digital Member and tune in each Friday at 5 PM (PT) for the latest concert. Make it a regular date. Bring a glass of wine and cozy up – we think you will discover that digital technology can reveal new dimensions of musical performance. Fridays at Five is not your typical video concert series; it is designed to take you inside the music.
