SFJAZZ (Fair Use)
MUSIC: Atta Kid returns for a night focusing, appropriately, on the music of Joe Henderson, and in particular, re-imagined versions of classics from Henderson’s 1960s Blue Note years as well as gems from the string of funk-infused releases he recorded for the Milestone label in the early to mid-70s.

Over the decades the East Bay has nurtured many of funk’s definitive acts, and the powerful groove-centric tandem of Atta Kid draws directly on that proud lineage. Founded in 2012 by tenor and baritone saxophonist Daniel Casares and Hammond B-3 organist Max Cowan, Atta Kid has found a soul sweet spot by bridging the contagious lilt of New Orleans R&B with the greasy legacy of East Bay funk (which of course was profoundly influenced by Crescent City grooves).
