Composed by Antonio Sartorio and Marc’Antonio Ziani, La Flora premiered in Venice in 1681 to great fanfare but was never seen again. This fall, audiences will have the public’s first chance to witness this rare gem since it was originally staged. Set during the late Roman Republic, and centering on the character of Flora, the love interest of the military hero Pompey the Great, La Flora explores the complications that ensue when Pompey is arranged to marry the emperor’s daughter, who is herself already married to another. Flora fights to keep Pompey to herself, but Pompey proves to be captive more to power than to love.
