Join us for a free night of fun with music, dancing, and community! Two generations of CMC ensemble musicians play smokin’ dance music from the Americas in a special December MAPP event. Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP) will play music from throughout the Americas including cumbia, música norteña, son, danzón, and cha-cha-chá. CMC’s Cuban Charanga Ensemble will be play a swinging set of Cuban dance music, from danzón to timba.
The evening includes dance lessons and live music:

Mission District Young Musicians Program is a group of 25 middle and high school youth from the Mission District that plays music from Cuba, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Peru, as well as Latin jazz. The Mission District Young Musicians Program is a CMC tuition free program for low-income Mission District youth, in which students receive a half-hour private lesson, gather for weekly classes at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, and interact with master guest artists.
Cuban Charanga Ensemble meets on Wednesdays at CMC and plays cha-cha-chá, danzón, guaracha, bolero, son, salsa and other Afro-Cuban dance music in an ensemble setting. Charanga ensembles are known for playing Cuban music with European instruments such as violin and flute in addition to bass, piano, and Afro-Cuban percussion.
MAPP is a familia, a community and a series of arts, music and activist events that has been taking place in the Mission for over 14 years. MAPP is always the first Saturday of the month every two months. MAPP is always free. MAPP will be encompasses over 14 venues as well as public spaces, street corners, BART stations, cafes, bars, taquerias, homes all over La Mission. The event features taking common spaces and for one orchestrated beautifully chaotic evening, transforming them into whatever we want: including free live music, spoken word, performance art, film screenings, BBQ’s, garage sales, unorthodox conversations and happenings. MAPP is dedicated to cultivating, building and defending the culture, history, character and community in the Mission District.
